The Fleet Mechanic position is crucial to maintaining the operational readiness of GCU’s diverse fleet. The Fleet Mechanic will carry out scheduled and preventative maintenance, troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical problems and issues, and repair vehicles to meet manufacturers’ standards. They will use a range of tools and testing equipment to carry out repairs and ensure that all work meets safety standards.
Essential Functions of the Fleet Mechanic
- Meets with the Fleet Manager to discuss and prioritize tasks.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues to determine the most effective and efficient repair solutions.
- Perform semi-skilled work of average difficulty in the maintenance and repair of light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks and other similar mechanical equipment.
- Perform general repairs, such as removing and replacing radiators, water pumps, brakes, belts, wipers, and lights.
- Conduct thorough inspections of vehicles to ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
- Maintain and repair tools, equipment, and company-assigned vehicles as required.
- Utilizing a continuous improvement mindset assists in identifying opportunities to improve processes.
- Ensure all work is completed to the highest standards.
- Arrive at the office or job site on time and ready to work.
- Adhere to company policies.
- Works when scheduled and complies with the company attendance policy.
- Travel to various job sites as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Fleet Mechanic Qualifications
- Five years of servicing and repairing various types of vehicles and mobile equipment is a must.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check and be able to participate in a random drug screening program as required by FMCSA.
- Must have or be able to obtain a Class A or B commercial driver’s license permit within six months of hire.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Demonstrated ability to service, diagnose, and repair various types of vehicles and equipment.
- Experience working in a physical labor position with outdoor construction is strongly preferred.
Physical Requirement/Working Conditions
Industrial setting, outside environment, possible exposure to extreme temperatures and elements, noisy conditions, exposure to hazardous chemicals. Conditions include tight spaces. Position requires climbing, walking, bending, stooping, standing for long periods, using hands and fingers to operate tools, and reaching and working at heights.
Travel Requirements: Must be willing and capable of traveling weekly as required and on weekends as needed.
