Gulf Coast Underground (GCU) was selected to perform detailed stormwater infrastructure evaluations for the 2019 Drainage Group E – Part A project in Mobile, Alabama. The scope included over 3,500 linear feet of closed-circuit television (CCTV) inspection of large-diameter storm drain lines ranging from 12 inches to 48 inches in diameter. This work supported the City of Mobile’s effort to assess aging drainage assets and proactively plan for future rehabilitation needs.
Inspections were performed throughout a variety of environments, including residential neighborhoods, commercial corridors, and high-traffic intersections. These conditions required GCU to implement comprehensive traffic control measures, closely coordinate with city departments, and adjust working hours and access plans to minimize community disruption. GCU’s crews used PACP-certified inspection methods and advanced CCTV crawler systems capable of navigating and capturing high-resolution footage inside large storm drains.
All inspection data was carefully reviewed and converted into condition reports that included NASSCO-compliant defect codes, high-quality video files, and segment-specific narratives. These deliverables were provided to the project engineer and the City of Mobile to support informed decision-making on future maintenance and capital improvement efforts. Throughout the project, GCU maintained open lines of communication with the City’s Public Works and Engineering divisions to ensure safety, clarity, and minimal delays.
By leveraging its experience with large-diameter pipe inspection, GCU successfully delivered a complete and organized data set, giving the City of Mobile a detailed understanding of current pipe conditions across the project area. The project was completed on time and within budget, demonstrating GCU’s ability to manage complex urban inspections with minimal disturbance to the surrounding public.
